The Gold American Eagle bullion coin was established in 1985 as the official gold bullion coin of the United States of American. The U.S.Mint released the first coins in 1986. The purity level and gold content of these coins is guaranteed by the U.S. government. The coin is legal tender so is mixed with silver and copper to make it more durable. The actual gold is .9167 purity or 22 karat gold, however the weight of the coin exceed 1 ounce so contains 1 troy ounce of gold.

This Eagle side of the coin is designed by Miley Busiek and the Liberty side of the coin is a rendition of Lady Liberty designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Liberty's hair is flowing, she holds a torch in one hand, an olive branch in the other hand and you can see the Capitol building in the background.

The South African Gold Krugerrand was first minted in 1967 and was developed by the South African government to encourage private ownership of gold bullion coins and to market South African gold. Their strategy worked beautifully and by 1980 the Krugerrand was the gold bullion coin of choice for 90% of the gold coin sold. At the end of 2008 the Krugerrand coins circulation totaled 46 million troy ounces.
The Krugerrand was minted as currency and was blended with a copper so it was more durable for the handling required for currency. During apartheid, South Africa was subjected to an economic boycott which made it illegal to import the Krugerrand. The boycott lasted for the 1970s and 1980s and in 1994 South Africa abandoned apartheid and the boycott was lifted. The wild success of the Krugerrand was an opportunity for other nations to begin minting their own gold bullion coins including the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, the Australian Nugget, the American Gold Eagle and the British Britannia bullion coin.
Do not confuse the Krugerrand with bullion rounds on the market that are patterned after the Krugerrand being produced by private mints. The bullion rounds are not currency and cannot be considered coins. Some of the rounds are blatant copies of the Krugerrand , however, they have no legal tender and are not official.
The Krugerrand has a purity of 91.67% and is considered 22 karats because it is blended with the copper alloy. The weight of a 1 oz Krugerrand is actually 1.0909 troy ounces so the coin does contain one troy ounce of gold.

There is an exception to this purity level because Maple Leaf coins minted from 1979 and 1982 are pure to that of.999%.
The Gold Canadian Maple Leaf has a Maple Leaf design on one side and an image of the Queen on the reverse. The Gold Canadian Maple Leaf was first minted in 1979. At the time the only bullion coin available was the South African Krugerrand. This was during the economic boycott of South Africa due to apartheid and Canada saw an opportunity and began producing their gold bullion coin.
